For many years now, Moontoon, a Chinese video game developer based in Shanghai, is dominating the mobile gaming industry with their most addictive Multi-player Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game called Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Just recently, they have celebrated their 1 billion downloads, cementing their reputation as one of the most popular mobile game in the world.
This year, Riot Games, an American video game developer and publisher based in California, has opened an early access to their most anticipated mobile version of their already popular MOBA game called League of Legends. The game has already kicked-off now and is currently gaining traction among MOBA gamers.
Back in 2017, Riot Games filed a lawsuit in California against Moontoon for copyright infringement due to the similarities of the heroes in Mobile Legends with the heroes in League of Legends. But the case was dismissed citing a reason that another court could conveniently hear the case--and that court is in China.
Tencent, the parent company of Riot Games, was reportedly filed a lawsuit in China on-behalf of Riot Games. They eventually won the case and was awarded a $2.9M.
Personally, when I played Mobile Legends for the first time, I can really tell why Riot Games sued Moonton. Mobile Legend's heroes are indeed very similar to those in League of Legends. For instance, Annie is very similar to Nana, Jinx to Layla and Garen to Tigreal. Some of the other heroes' skills are also very similar to those in ML.
Mobile Legends is undeniably the leading MOBA game right now. Its closest competitor, Arena of Valor, is seemingly could not catch-up to ML's populariy.
I have tried playing AOV and in my opinion the game is not really that bad. Their heroes are actually good with nice graphics and animation. However, the game's pace is a bit slow and boring. It is less exciting and take more time to build-up the fun and excitement. On the other hand, Mobile Legends is a direct contrast to AOV. When the game started, you really need to pay attention to the game because anything could happen. In other words, the excitement and thrill starts when the game begins.
In playing AOV, I do not actually get the same excitement and thrill that I get from playing Mobile Legends. Is the game entertaining? Yes it is but not as entertaining as Mobile Legends.
This year, a new challenger to Mobile Legends' dominance come into play, the League of Legends: Wildrift. I already started playing this game and I see the threat it has against ML.
In playing League of Legends, the first thing I noticed is that it really has a superb graphics design and animation. It also has a minimalistic approach package with a fitting background music. This alone already creates a big difference from Mobile Legends.
League of Legends' battlefield is also full of wonderful effects. The creeps that are available for farming are indeed mystical. The defense turret's design and the Nexus are creatively beautiful. There is no doubt that one of the strengths of this game is the animation, graphic design, music and hero skill set. However, I personally think that there is still one area that this game could not win against Mobile Legends and that is the lack of thrill and excitement.
Mobile Legends' strength lies in the pace of the game and how it is focused on how good the gamer played the hero's abilities. When the game starts, the thrill and excitement also begins. This is the kind of gameplay that everybody wants--and League of Legends lack a piece of it.
Though, it has a better pace than AOV it is still not enough to beat Mobile Legends. When we play Mobile Legends there is this sense of pride in playing an imporant role within the team, like being a good tanker or a merciless MVP assasin or a savage marksman. One good player with 4 other not so good teammates has a chance to carry the entire team and win the game. This is one factor that is somehow not emphasize in League of Legends or in AOV.
The player's mastery of the hero he used during the game also matters a lot in Mobile Legends. There is also a sense of clarity in the items you need to buy to improve your hero's performance during the game. In League of Legends, some of the item's capability are too generic making these items just a mere accessory and nothing else.
In Mobile Legends, there is a time when you need to buy specific item to counter the ability of your enemies in order to win the game. Aside from that, Mobile Legends also carries a compelling voice over compared to the boring and tired voice over in League of Legends.
As a final note, I think Mobile Legends is better than League of Legends in terms of what game is giving more thrill, excitement and fun. League of Legends is way better in terms of graphic design and animation. But if you are asking which one should I play more for now? I would say I will still stick with Mobile Legends. I will still continue to play League of Legends but maybe that not often as ML.
Hopefully, Riot Games will change the pace of the game to make it less boring and more exciting. I am not sure what else is missing but in my opinion League of Legends and AOV do not really give me the same fun, thrill and excitement that I get when playing Mobile Legends.
